The Most Delicious Rocky Road…
Back in November, last year, David and Georgia got in touch with me via Hipages (an app that connects people to businesses for home repairs and renovations). They requested a quote for their Ensuite Bathroom Renovation at Calamvale. Happy with the quote and after 10 days on the tools it was complete in time for Christmas! What I didn’t expect was Georgia gifting me the most delicious home-made Rocky Road and White Christmas I had ever tasted. My family was quick to scoff it all down.
In January when I told my wife that David had once again been in touch, asking me to renovate their second (main) bathroom, the first thing she said was…
“Ohhhhhh, do you think Georgia would mind making us some more rocky road? It was so delicious!” I chucked to myself.
The Renovation Goals
- To create a sophisticated Main Bathroom, Powder Room and Separate Toilet consistent in design with their newly renovated Ensuite Bathroom.
- Maximise the space of the bathroom, creating a larger shower area and inclusive of a large freestanding bathtub.
- Modernise the powder room; a separate, spacious area.
Bathroom Design Choices
Georgia selected the following items:
- Marble-look finish tiles, which we used on the walls (600 x 300)
- Charcoal floor tile (600 x 600)
- Chrome tapware
- Large showerhead
- Freestanding bathtub
- Custom made 2pac Wall Hung Vanity with Stone Benchtop
- Modern Black Frame Circle Mirror
- Shower Recess
The Bathroom Renovation Process
In February I began the demolition. I laid down the Ram Board protection flooring; a heavy-duty cardboard to protect a client’s floors during renovation works. I anticipated the demo would take me two days: removing old tiles, wall sheeting, and old fixtures. However, knowing I had to finish a bit earlier the following day so I could take my son Maddox to his speech therapy appointment, I went to town on the jackhammer. Surprising both myself and David the demolition took me just one full day (9 hours of solid work).
The design selection of the tiles, fixtures and fittings such as tapware as well as the vanity and toilet were straight-forward because we were using the same design as their Ensuite Bathroom. For their first bathroom renovation David was quite hands on; visiting my supplier’s showroom to view options and make his selections. We had everything delivered. We ordered all these items with the use of the deposit paid, to ensure we have everything ready on site for when we need it; taking into consideration any supply wait times.
After the demo the plumbing and electrical works took place.
Sheeting and waterproofing were next. It’s one of the most important stages in the renovation process. The last thing anybody wants is for their bathroom to start leaking and for there to be water damage in the future all because the area wasn’t waterproofed in the correct manner, with attention to detail, using a high-quality class 3 product.
On Tuesday the 18th bright and early at 7am I got to work with tiling. By 4pm I had tiled 3 walls in the main bathroom. A Mammoth Effort! I knew David wanted me to finish a little earlier the following day, so he could pick up his grandchildren from school, so I wanted to ensure all walls were going to be completed by the time I had to leave on Wednesday.
The quality of the tiling finish is the most noticeable thing seen in a finished bathroom. It can make or break the overall look and quality. That’s why it’s important to have high quality tiles and grout, attention to detail and accuracy. Overall, the tiling for the three rooms took 6 days.
After tiling is complete, we installed all the fixtures and accessories, such as the bath, vanity, towel rails, shower screen, mirror etc. This took 2 days.
Once everything’s in place, we silicone and sealed and undertook painting, electrical fit off and plumbing fit off.
After ensuring David and Georgia was happy and everything was working beautifully, we had the 3 rooms thoroughly cleaned by a professional cleaner.
Being a Friday afternoon, I couldn’t resist stopping on the way home for a well earnt carton of Stone and Wood. 😊
This 3-room renovation took 19 days.
“Simon managed the makeover from start to finish very professionally and efficiently. Our bathroom looks great and we were very happy with the standard of Simon’s work and the cost. Very reasonable. I would definitely recommend Simon and Avocado Constructions as they did a great job at a reasonable cost.”
